With the Lok Sabha elections just two weeks away, Uttar Pradesh Police has activated a special cell to censure objectionable content on social media platforms.
The cell would scan social media outlets such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram to curb objectionable content, which could spread communal tension or create law and order disturbance during elections.
UP Director General of Police (DGP) O P Singh would personally review its working. UP cyber crime SP has been anointed the nodal officer of the social media complaint cell and a dedicated 24×7 WhatsApp number 9792101616 has been designated for the public to lodge complaints.
Recently, the Election Commission of India (ECI) had held an interactive session with the representatives of social media platforms apart from the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI).
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sunil Arora had said the model code of conduct was a unique document to be followed by all political parties from the date of declaration of election schedule till the election process is concluded.
Tagging social media as formidable force multipliers, he called upon them to evolve a similar Code for themselves during elections.
