London Police today arrested WikiLeaks founder and transparency advocate Julian Assange after his diplomatic asylum in the Ecuador’s embassy was cancelled by the host country.
According to international media reports, Assange, who faces the prospects of extradition to the US apart from other probes, was arrested after Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno announced on Twitter the country had withdrawn his diplomatic asylum.
Since, 2012, the 47-year-old had been living in virtual exile in the Ecuadorian embassy after seeking to avoid interrogation in a Swedish sexual-assault case. Although, these charges were later dropped in 2017, Assange stayed put in the boxy London apartment, thus excusing himself from both the UK police and American prosecutors.
Meanwhile, in his Twitter feed, UK foreign minister Jeremy Hunt observed Assange was no hero and that he had hidden from “the truth for years.”
Meanwhile, WikiLeaks posted on Twitter that Ecuador had “illegally” terminated Assange’s asylum.
Assange had become famous in 2010 after WikiLeaks published state secrets supplied by US Army soldier Chelsea Manning.
