Uttar Pradesh government today announced to swoop down upon syndicates involved in the manufacture and sale of illicit liquor and hooch.
The Yogi Adityanath government will invoke Gangster Act and if needed even stringent National Security Act (NSA) against such criminals. UP excise principal secretary Sanjay Bhoosreddy has issued instructions to all the district magistrates in this regard.
More than 100 people of UP and neighbouring Uttarakhand had died in poisonous hooch tragedy that struck Saharapur and the adjoining hill state areas in February 2019. Later, hooch deaths were also reported from Barabanki and Sitapur districts as well.
Meanwhile, the government counsels would also ensure foolproof prosecution of accused in the courts, so that they are given strict punishment under the provisions of law.
The current provisions allow for life imprisonment and even death penalty if found guilty in the case of hooch deaths, grievous injury or disability of the victim.
