The premier Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) has facilitated distribution of nearly 2 million solar study lamps to students in rural Uttar Pradesh.
The project is part of the UP State Rural Livelihood Mission (UPSRLM), under which 3.4 million lamps would be disbursed in 115 blocks across 29 districts.
Besides, the expansive project integrated 4,000 women associated with self help groups (SHG), thus providing them with income totalling Rs 6 crore.
According to UP principal secretary rural development Anurag Srivastava, several such initiatives had been launched to make state rural women financially strong.
Such women have also been networked for sewing jobs, so that they could engage in self employment at the local level and improve their living conditions.
