Lucknow, 3 Jan
Almost 1.5 million public sector power employees will observe a day’s work boycott/strike on January 8 against the proposed amendment in Electricity Act 2003.
The powermen claim the amendment was targetted at surreptitious privatisation of power utilities by segregating carriage and content.
According to the All India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF) chairman Shailendra Dubey, the proposed amendment will hit the farmers and weaker sections of society hard, and to highlight the issue, the government sector powermen would stage a day long work boycott on January 8.
The protest is being organised under the banner of the National Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees and Engineers (NCCOEEE), an umbrella organisation representing 1.5 million power workers and engineers with the power sector of India.
The motive of the proposed Bill is to create business avenues for private enterprises in the power distribution vertical without making any investment, he noted.
Dubey claimed the proposed Bill will bear far reaching consequences both for the respective state governments and consumers.
