Yogi government to expand skill development bandwidth

Uttar Pradesh government will top gear central skill development programme ‘Skill on Wheels’ in all major cities, including VIP constituencies of Varanasi, Gorakhpur and Lucknow.
‘Skill on Wheels’ programme is piloted by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) to guide budding entrepreneurs and job seekers.
Chief minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to rollout the flagship programme in Varanasi, Allahabad, Gorkahpur, Lucknow, Agra, Meerut and Jhansi districts. The state intends to train half-million skilled workers with 5 day training and awarding them with Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) certificate to boost their earning capability.
RPL is a platform to provide recognition to informal learning or learning through work to get equal acceptance as formal levels of education.
Yogi stressed upon an effective skill development programme for the youth in all the development blocks in the state to create local employment opportunities, so as to arrest their migration to other places.
Meanwhile, union minister of state for skill development and entrepreneurship Anant Kumar Hegde said the proposed Indian Institute of Skills (IIS) at Kanpur would go a long way in strengthening the skill development bandwidth of UP. The foundation of IIS, which has been modelled on Indian Institute of Management (IIM), was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 19, 2017.
IIS is being set up by the union skill development ministry in partnership with the Institute of Technical Education, Singapore. The ministry plans to open 6 six such institutes across India.
At present, about 300 government and 2,715 industrial training institute (ITI) are operating in UP, which along with state skill development mission are engaged in providing skill development.
